You Are f*cked Without a Backup Plan: 94% of companies without a backup recovery plan are out of business within 2 years of loss

April 29, 2015 2:43 pm

6 karma points

Why is backup so important? One answer to that question is that it’s not IF you will lose your data, but WHEN. Loss may be due to a contractor hitting the wrong switch and deleting critical data, or deletion by a trusted and valuable employee who didn’t notice the server GUI changed. You may have to cope with intentional vandalism by a rogue vendor with access to your network, or a massive attack of thousands of infected computers. Losing your data is a business reality. The question is, can you get your data back … and how fast?

The type of data you have, and what that data is precisely, will be a factor in how the data is backed up. Here are some critical tips to approaching backing up your company’s critical data.

Why you need to limit bots

January 20, 2015 9:49 am

15 karma points

The use of bots and scrapers continues to surge, and they are pounding your web server resources, cloud or not. Bot behavior is for the most part benign, but poorly-coded and malicious bots can hurt site speed and performance. They look like DDoS attacks. They may be part of a rival’s competition monitoring, or re-purposing your content and presenting it as their own.

iOS video format criteria for Apple app store approval

January 12, 2015 12:25 pm

1 karma points

Here are the main considerations for encoding video for your iOS app, or your video is being used in an iOS / iTunes app that you would like to have available in the iTunes store:

If your app delivers video over cellular networks, and the video exceeds either 10 minutes duration or 5 MB of data in a five minute period, you are required to use HTTP Live Streaming. (Progressive download may be used for smaller clips.)

If your app uses HTTP Live Streaming over cellular networks, you are required to provide at least one stream at 64 Kbps or lower bandwidth (the low-bandwidth stream may be audio-only or audio with a still image).

What is the Difference Between Streaming Video, Live webcasting and Progressive Download?

January 6, 2015 12:06 am

4 karma points

To sum up the reasons you might want to use streaming, live broadcasting, or progressive download:

  • If your video project includes live coverage, you must use broadcasting, or live webcasting.
  • If bandwidth management, DRM and copy discouragement (e.g. preventing download) are paramount considerations, streaming video or token authentication is the way to go.
  • If bandwidth is not a paramount concern, you want users to be able to receive you media regardless of connection speed, and you don’t mind if users obtain the actual downloaded copies of your audio and video content on their computers and portable devices, progressive download may be viable.

12/13/14 is the last time in our lifetime the date will be sequential.

December 13, 2014 11:19 pm

2 karma points

Time can be different things to different people. It all depends on who and when you ask: long, short, money, an arrow, an illusion or the fourth dimension. Most people today agree on how to tell time, counting 60 seconds in a minute and 24 hours in a day. And while different cultures celebrate their own months and holidays, the 12-month Gregorian calendar is now the most widely used option for marking a given date.

So today will be the last sequential date of the 21st century: 12/13/14. The next such numerical alignment won’t roll around for another 89 years. In Europe, this milestone has already passed, because folks there prefer to format dates starting with the day. For Europeans, 11 December 2013 (11/12/13) was the last sequential date of the century.
