Timex built a smartwatch that doesn’t need your phone

August 6, 2014 1:44 am

So far, smartwatches have existed fundamentally as extensions of your phone — their primary value is in alleviating the need to pull your phone out of your pocket every time anything happens. But Timex’s new IronMan One GPS+ is designed to let you forget your phone at home: with a 3G radio inside and a number of built-in communication tools, it’s a fully independent device.

The $399.95 One GPS+ looks a lot like Timex just strapped a chunky, ugly computer on your wrist. It has an always-on Mirasol display just like the Qualcomm Toq, and an icon-based homescreen. Timex says it’s every bit as rugged and water-resistant (up to 50m) as its other IronMan models. In every other way, though, it’s nothing like anything Timex has done before. It…

We learned this morning that Paypal’s two-factor authentication setup has a fairly major hole in it, detailed here. The researcher who found it, a 17-year-old who has done impressive work spotting vulnerabilities in Australian government sites, first reported the bug to Paypal back in June, but after two months of radio silence, he went public.

A$AP Rocky is the subject of Noisey‘s new documentary SVDDXNLY, which follows the MC on tour. The first part is available to watch now, with the following four parts rolling out weekly.

In the clip, Rocky discusses his burgeoning stardom, the first raps he ever wrote, and Rihanna, who also makes a cameo. “I know I’m here for a purpose,” he says. “That purpose is to create art. If I get recognition for it, that’s a blessing.” His mother and sister are also in the documentary, and attest to his potential from a young age.

Directed by VICE’s David Laven, the documentary is also set to feature cameos from Drake, Danny Brown, Kathy Griffin, Snoop Dogg, Macklemore, Jeremy Scott, and others. SVDDXNLY features unreleased music from Rocky’s in-the-works album of instrumentals, Beauty & The Beast: Slowed Down Sessions (Chapter 1).

As you might have noticed, Arcade Fire have covered a region-specific song in every city they’ve visited on their current tour. They’ve covered Jane’s Addiction in Los Angeles, the Smiths in London, R.E.M. in Atlanta, and so forth. At last night’s show in Santa Barbara, California, they played Dead Kennedys“California Über Alles”, which was written about current California governor Jerry Brown. (He was governor in 1979, when the song was written, and he’s also the governor today. It’s a long story.) Watch a video below, via Consequence of Sound.

Following 2011’s Demolished Thoughts and the end of Sonic Youth, Thurston Moore will release a new solo album on Matador. It’s titled The Best Day. According to a post on Sonic Youth’s website, it features collaborations with Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, My Bloody Valentine bassist Debbie Googe, and London-based musician James Sedwards. (The release date of September 23 reported on Sonic Youth’s website is incorrect. The Best Day does not currently have an announced release date.)

A few songs on The Best Day feature Samara Lubelski, John Moloney (Sunburned Hand of the Man), and Keith Wood (Hush Arbors) from Moore’s band Chelsea Light Moving.

The post also describes the record as “Sweet, deadly and furthering the wild style TM exhibited all through Sonic Youth and beyond.” In a live clip from Portugal, below, Moore plays some of the new songs with Shelley and Sedwards. He also says the record is dedicated to his mother.

Meanwhile, Moore, Shelley, Googe, and Sedwards will tour Europe this summer and North America this fall under the name Thurston Moore Band.

Listen to “Easy Rider,” the New Single from Action Bronson

When I was little, I used to sit with my fingers quivering over the “REC” and “PLAY” buttons, ready to record the latest joint by whoever, just so I could rock it on my walkman later. It was a long time ago so who gave a shit if it sounded like poo; I just wanted to have it and know the words before my other homies did. Nowaways, everything’s being recorded, so a dub off of the radio isn’t really all that special, and more annoying than anything.

Today, Action Bronson dropped his first single from Mr. Wonderful, “Easy Rider,” with an unceremonious release to radio, prompting the internets to go buckwild and post every grade-B, sub-par dub of the track ever to be played out of a tin can. Noisey won’t play you like that though. Here’s that real real real version, that professional shit. Because we love you and you deserve only the best.

Who Stole the Four Hour Workday?

Alex is a busy man. The 36-year-old husband and father of three commutes each day to his full-time job at a large telecom company in Denver, the city he moved to from his native Peru in 2003. At night, he has classes or homework for the bachelor’s in social science he is pursuing at a nearby university. With or without an alarm, he wakes up at 5 AM every day, and it’s only then, after eating breakfast and glancing at the newspaper, that he has a chance to serve in his capacity as the sole US organizer and webmaster of the Global Campaign for the 4 Hour Work-Day.

“I’ve been trying to contact other organizations,” he says, “though, ironically, I don’t have time.”

But Alex has big plans. By the end of the decade he envisions “a really crazy movement” with chapters around the world orchestrating the requisite work stoppage.

A century ago, such an undertaking would have seemed less obviously doomed. For decades the US labor movement had already been filling the streets with hundreds of thousands of workers demanding an eight-hour workday. This was just one more step in the gradual reduction of working hours that was expected to continue forever. Before the Civil War, workers like the factory women of Lowell, Massachusetts, had fought for a reduction to ten hours from 12 or more. Later, when the Great Depression hit, unions called for shorter hours to spread out the reduced workload and prevent layoffs; big companies like Kellogg’s followed suit voluntarily. But in the wake of World War II, the eight-hour grind stuck, and today most workers end up doing more than that.

The United States now leads the pack of the wealthiest countries in annual working hours. US workers put in as many as 300 more hours a year than their counterparts in Western Europe, largely thanks to the lack of paid leave. (The Germans work far less than we do, while the Greeks work considerably more.) Average worker productivity has doubled a couple of times since 1950, but income has stagnated—unless you’re just looking at the rich, who’ve become a great deal richer. The value from that extra productivity, after all, has to go somewhere.

It used to be common sense that advances in technology would bring more leisure time. “If every man and woman would work for four hours each day on something useful,” Benjamin Franklin assumed, “that labor would produce sufficient to procure all the necessaries and comforts of life.” Science fiction has tended to consider a future with shorter hours to be all but an axiom. Edward Bellamy’s 1888 best seller Looking Backward describes a year 2000 in which people do their jobs for about four to eight hours, with less attractive tasks requiring less time. In the universe of Star Trek, work is done for personal development, not material necessity. In Wall-E, robots do everything, and humans have become inert blobs lying on levitating sofas.

The summer’s most stylish game is made of infographics

August 5, 2014 4:00 pm

Video game levels are dangerous: Mario has to deal with lava-spewing pits, while Solid Snake slips through heavily guarded enemy buildings in Metal Gear Solid. Metrico for the PS Vita, on the other hand, puts you in a world made of something much more mundane: infographics. The game asks you to navigate puzzles made of bar graphs and pie charts. It’s not the most obvious inspiration for a game, but it works. “It is all about communication in composition,” Geert Nellen, one-third of Dutch game studio Digital Dreams, says of infographic design, “which makes it perfect for games.” And despite its seemingly strange concept, Metrico is an impossibly stylish and uniquely challenging experience.

Metrico looks and controls like a traditional…

Here’s what a 3D-printed saxophone sounds like

August 5, 2014 3:40 pm

0

Can you make a 3D-printed saxophone that’s a fraction as heavy as a “normal” one but sounds, to the untrained ear, virtually the same? Yes. I mean, you probably couldn’t, but luthier Olaf Diegel has done exactly that. Diegel took a break from making high-end 3D-printed guitars and tried his hand at the complex key structure of an alto saxophone, producing a prototype that’s made almost entirely of printed plastic. It requires a bigger, better printer than most consumers will ever own, and Diegel’s still working on integrating 3D-printed springs instead of metal ones. As he admits, there are already plastic injection-molded saxophones. But that doesn’t make this anything less than an impressive feat, and it opens up a world of new design…

The entire tech industry struggling to compete with Apple, in one insane chart

August 5, 2014 3:28 pm

0

Jan Dawson at Jackdaw Research has a great post about Samsung up today, arguing that the company’s future rests on turning around the struggling mobile division. It’s an interesting argument, but this insane chart in the middle is the real story: there isn’t a single consumer electronics company or major division that’s posted above a 10 percent operating margin for the past two years. Everyone’s fighting for scraps in a crowded market that’s getting even tighter as more and more individual devices get rolled up into mobile phones.

Meanwhile, Apple’s operating margin has averaged around 30 percent for the past two years, falling to a low of 27 percent in Q2 2013 and most recently coming in at 28.84 percent.

Man Bitten by Attacker During Arctic Monkeys’ Lollapalooza Set

Lollapalooza photo by David Sampson

Ben Lenet, 29, allegedly suffered an unprompted biting attack by an unidentified assailant on Friday night during Arctic Monkeys’ set at Lollapalooza, The Chicago Sun-Times reports. Lenet initially posted an account of the attack to Reddit, while asking for help identifying his attacker.“The mood of the crowd is really happy and a nice departure from the normal drunken debauchery,” he wrote. “Suddenly, I turn around and some guy none of us have ever seen or spoken to, without warning, body slams my friend and begins using his hands to choke him.”

Lenet and his friends began to fight back, but when Lenet attempted to pull the attacker off, he was bitten on his right arm “for a good 5 seconds.” As he told the Sun-Times, “He’s not biting me. He’s clearly trying to bite through me.” Lenet posted photos of his arm injury here.

After taking 10-15 blows to the head, the attacker then walked away without being noticeably affected. According to the Chicago police, he may have been on bath salts or PCP. “I don’t know of a UFC fighter who could’ve taken that punishment and just walked away,” Lenet told the Sun-Times. Writing on Reddit, he also said, “No one stopped him because everyone was shocked by the hole in my arm and I don’t think anyone had much interest in trying to apprehend the dude who just took 10 punches and a punt to the face from three big dudes….and walked away.”

Lenet was then treated at the on-site medical tent. Because the bite broke the skin, he may have been exposed to hepatitis or HIV, and was subsequently placed on an anti-HIV cocktail. He did not return to the festival on Saturday or Sunday, and said it’s unlikely he’ll go in the future.

Lerner described his assailant as “between 5’7 and 5’11, dark skin (maybe Hispanic, but not black), 170-210 pounds.” The police said that no one is being held in custody in conjunction with the attack.

This was the second reported biting attack at a concert this week.

Godflesh Announce New Album A World Lit Only By Fire, Share “New Dark Ages”

If you’ve heard of FKA Twigs by now, it’s likely thanks to music sites like Pitchfork, which have been featuring the singer’s warped, R&B-infused tracks as she’s quickly gone from self-releasing her first EP to planning one of the more exciting LPs of 2014. She’s now a week away from releasing her first album, the descriptively titled LP1, and it’s just become available to stream on iTunes. LP1 is a must listen, filled with carefully moody tracks that make as impressive a use of empty space as they do of noise. And if you haven’t seen it, there’s an incredible music video to back up one of the best of them. Put on some good headphones and get listening.

The FBI is tracking Tor users with spyware and a new kind of warrant

August 5, 2014 2:21 pm

0

Tor has been a thorn in the side of law enforcement for years now, but new work from Wired‘s Kevin Poulsen shows the FBI has found a new way to track users across the network. Poulsen looks at the 2012 case of Aaron McGrath, who agents found hosting child pornography on a network of servers in Nebraska. Looking to expand on the bust, agents got a warrant to track anyone who visited the website at its Tor address, and infected servers with tracking malware to identify the root IP of anyone who visited the site. As a result, agents were able to track at least 25 users back to home addresses and subscriber names.

Spencer Krug Announces Moonface City Wrecker EP, Shares Video for Title Track

August 5, 2014 2:05 pm

0

Spencer Krug, formerly of Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown, has announced a new EP under his Moonface moniker. City Wrecker is the latest body of work since last year’s Julia With Blue Jeans On LP, and arrives September 16 on Jagjaguwar. According to a press release, the new set of tunes marks the final dispatches from Krug’s temporary home of Helsinki, Finland. Below, check out the EP’s tracklist, as well as a crisp, black-and-white clip for its title track.

In a press release, Krug writes:

City Wrecker is the title track of the EP. I wrote it before Miley Cyrus released “Wrecking Ball”, but I cannot prove it. Oh well. In describing the song (and maybe the whole EP) I would say it’s the aesthetic opposite of “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus, which is not to say that’s a good thing or a bad thing, just an apple for you to hold up beside your orange. Regardless of all that, my friend Eetu, who recorded this EP, still likes to call the song “Wrecking Ball” and to sometimes call me Miley, but that’s okay cuz we’re buddies.

XL Announce Pay Close Attention Compilation, Share Unreleased Vampire Weekend Documentary on Contra

August 5, 2014 2:00 pm

0

On August 25, XL Recordings will celebrate 25 years with a new compilation called Pay Close Attention, which compiles important music from the label’s illustrious discography. Radiohead, M.I.A., the White Stripes, Vampire Weekend, the Prodigy, the xx, Adele, Tyler the Creator, Jai Paul, Gil Scott-Heron, Basement Jaxx, the Horrors, Devendra Banhart, Basement Jaxx, and many more appear on the record.

The Pay Close Attention website is also chronicling the history of the label, with detailed timelines about all of XL’s releases. It will also be collecting new and unseen interviews and performances by artists who appear on the compilation. Below, watch a 15-minute documentary in which Vampire Weekend discuss the making of their 2010 album Contra. Update: Also below, watch previously unreleased footage of Odd Future’s first European tour, via Pigeons and Planes.

The compilation will be available as a quadruple-LP box set, which comes packaged with a DVD and poster, as well as a 2xCD set, and as a download.

Here’s what label head Richard Russell said of Pay Close Attention:

XL Recordings is a collaborative endeavour, and many people have contributed to its evolution. In the song ‘Out Of Space’, Liam Howlett of The Prodigy provided a blueprint when he sampled Kool Keith of Ultramagnetic MC’s rapping these words: “Pay Close Attention”. And whilst XL has never had any outside ownership, Gil Scott-Heron advised me not to even consider XL an “independent”, because everything is connected.

Part 1 of this compilation are the roots of XL; underground music, made for DJs. These roots are still growing. Part 2 features some of the singular talents who have taken the label further than we ever envisioned. There is no unifying genre; hopefully the thread of originality is evident though.

The rave music XL first became known for was known as “hardcore”; that spirit continues.

To show our appreciation for your support, thank you DJs.

And thank you also to the retailers, writers, and, of course, ravers.
