What is a .M3U8 file? + Example M3u8 template

A .M3U8 file is an ‘extensible playlist’ file format. It is basically a playlist containing UTF-8 encoded text that points at video files.

The m3u8 file format is a de facto standard playlist format suitable for carrying lists of media file URLs. Apple got good at metafiles that interacted with the video because of their development alongside of Real of .smil  files. (ever wonder what happened to smil files?)

Like a mRSS metadata file, m3u8 is the format used as the index file for HTTP Live Streaming. For details, see IETF Internet-Draft of the HTTP Live Streaming specification.Which can be a bit dense if you’re in a hurry.
